Try the following if the above did not work: sudo nano /etc/default/grub Make the line that say GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX="" to look like the following: GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX="acpi_backlight=vendor" Update grub by: sudo update-grub and reboot. I own an ASUS Zenbook UX303LN-R4197H on which only the brightness Fn keys were not working (backlight and sound volume OK) under Linux Mint 17.1 64-bits. All I can access is recovery shell, but I can't mount it rw to remove the file.

Now I can control the brightness of my laptop (HP G62). the artist formerly known as harpllo. I dont know what changed, but the steps I fallowed are the mentioned. It worked.
